First 1,000 Days Kansas applauds the passage of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act in the federal omnibus spending package. Their inclusion closes the gaps in workplace protections for pregnant and breastfeeding employees. This is a huge step forward for moms and working families across Kansas and the nation.
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will promote fairness, equality, and opportunity for expecting and new moms. Employers will have the clarity they need to address pregnant workers’ needs for accommodations. The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act will guarantee millions more workers the right to break time and space to express milk. Simple, reasonable accommodations for pregnant and breastfeeding employees are at the heart of both pieces of legislation.
The First 1,000 Days Kansas was proud to work closely with our Kansas lawmakers and national partners including A Better Balance to support the passage of this historic legislation. These victories represent some of the most significant updates to our federal workplace protection laws in decades.
“A Better Balance commends First 1,000 Days Kansas’ work with Kansas Senators and Representatives to advance this legislation,” said Sarah Brafman, National Policy Director at A Better Balance who led the national efforts for the passage of the PWFA.
Work now shifts to educating Kansas employers and employees about the implementation of these laws. First 1,000 Days invites you to join in these efforts. Please contact us at info@ksbreastfeeding.org if you have connections with employee groups, unions, worker centers, employers, Chambers of Commerce, HR professionals, or any business group that we might reach out to with information about the implementation of these new laws.
Thank you again for your support in the passage of these historic new laws.
